Changing dvds to work on an american dvd player?

I live in australia and im going on exchange to america for about half a year.I really want to take some dvds with me to watch but ive heard that dvds from australia dont work on american dvd players.Is there any way to change dvds to work on an american dvd player?

1. DVDs are classified by region, and to play them, you need a DVD player that is made for that region. Australia is region 4, and the US is region 1. There is nothing you can normally do to change the region of a DVD, but you can find a player that can play multiple regions - they are called "region 0". They are not common but you can order them online. Some DVD players on laptop computers are region 0, or allow you to choose the region and change it up to some number of times (often 5), so you might want to try that. Have a good trip.
